Install Xubuntu Theme in Debian Xfce

The default themes & icons that come with Debian Jessie are too old. So in this tutorial, we are going to see the steps to install Xubuntu Theme in Debian 8 Jessie Xfce.

The default theme used in Xubuntu is Greybird theme made by Shimmer Project and the icon set used in Xubuntu is Elementary Xfce Dark icon set which is also made by Shimmer Project and is hosted at Github.

Download & Install

Once again we are going to use PPA which is the easy method rather than building from source.

Add the following repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list file,

sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list

Greybird Theme & Elementary Xfce Icon Set

# Greybird Theme - Shimmer Project
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/shimmerproject/daily/ubuntu trusty main 
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/shimmerproject/daily/ubuntu trusty main

Now before we update, we need to add the key because when you add a third-party repository, you should also add its key to your system.

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 685D1580

Now lets update the system and install the theme & icon set,

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install shimmer-themes xubuntu-icon-theme

Activate the Theme & Icons

Now activate the theme using the settings manager. Go to Settings Manager -> Appearance

• Theme – In the Styles tab, choose Greybird
• Icon Set – In the Icons tab, choose elementary Xfce dark
